Procedure
To a solution of methyl 1-(pyridin-4-yl)-1H-indole-3-carboxylate (92 mg, 0.365 mmol) in water (365 μl) and MeOH (365 μl) was added KOH (102 mg, 1.823 mmol). The mixture was heated at 90° C. for 1 h then the MeOH was removed under reduced pressure. The residual aqueous layer was neutralized with 1M HCl (pH=6-7) then extracted with EtOAc. The combined organic layers were dried over anhydrous MgSO4, filtered, concentrated to afford the title compound as a yellow solid, which was used without further purification.
