3-Oxo-2-phenyl-2,3,5,7-tetrahydropyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrrolo[3,4-b]pyridine-6-carboxylic acid was dissolved in DMF (0.3 M) and heated at 220° C. in a microwave for 20 minutes. The crude reaction mixture was concentrated and column chromatography afforded the title compound as a brown solid. 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ ppm 7.07 (t, J=4.4 Hz, 1H) 7.14 (s, 1H) 7.36 (t, J=4.4 Hz, 2H) 7.44 (s, 1H) (8.15 (d, J=7.6 Hz, 1H) 8.29 (d, J=6.4 Hz 1H) 12.06 (s, 1H) 12.34 (s, 1H).
