5-Bromo-2-ethoxy-3H-imidazole-4-carbaldehyde (3.0 g, 13.7 mmol), 4′-bromomethylbiphenyl-2-carboxylic acid t-butyl ester (4.8 g, 13.7 mmol), and potassium carbonate (1.9 g, 13.7 mmol), were dissolved in DMF (60 mL, 780 mmol), and the mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight. The reaction was quenched with water, and the mixture was extracted with EtOAc, washed with saturated aqueous NaCl, dried over MgSO4, filtered, and concentrated. The resulting material was purified by silica gel chromatography (0-30% EtOAc:hexanes) to yield intermediate (17a) (5.6 g). MS m/z:
