Reaction Steps
n-Butyllithium (2.5M in hexanes, 3.3 mL) was added to a solution of 4,5-dibromo-2-ethoxy-1-(2-trimethylsilanylethoxymethyl)-1H-imidazole (3.0 g, 7.5 mmol) and N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethylenediamine (1.2 mL, 8.3 mmol) in THF (20 mL) at −78° C. After 3 minutes, a solution of hexachloroethane (2.3 g, 9.7 mmol) in THF (8 mL) was added at −78° C. The mixture was stirred at −78° C. for 1 hour and was then allowed to warm to room temperature. Saturated aq. NH4Cl (3 mL) was added and the mixture was concentrated in vacuo. The mixture was extracted with EtOAc (2×100 mL) and sat. aq. NaHCO3 (30 mL). The combined organic fractions were dried over Na2SO4, filtered, and concentrated in vacuo. Silica gel chromatography (EtOAc:hexane) afforded intermediate (26a) (2.3 g).
