Reaction Steps

To a 20 dram microwave vial was added 2-(6-methoxypyridin-2-yl)-2-methylpropanenitrile (7 g, 40 mmol) and 4N HCl in dioxane (15 mL). The reaction was then sealed and heated in a microwave reactor at 190° C. for 30 min. This reaction was repeated six times using the procedure above. These reactions were combined and filtered. The resultant white solid was washed with 20% EtOAc/hexanes and then dried in vacuo to afford 2-methyl-2-(6-oxo-1,6-dihydropyridin-2-yl)propanenitrile (24.7 g, 77%) as a white solid.
