1-(5-Bromo-3,3-dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-indol-1-yl)-ethanone (2.0 g, 7.5 mmol) was slowly added to chlorosulfonic acid (20 mL) and the resulting solution was stirred at room temperature for 3 days. The mixture was then carefully poured over ice and the resulting solid filtered, washed with water and dried in vacuo to give the title compound (2.7 g) as a pale brown solid. 1H NMR (Acetone-d6): 9.02 (1H, s), 7.89 (1H, s), 4.11 (2H, s), 2.26 (3H, s), 1.49 (6H, s).
