Procedure

3,3,5-Trimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-indole (1.84 g, 11.43 mmol) was dissolved in concentrated sulfuric acid (25 mL) and silver sulfate (1.90 g, 6.06 mmol) added. The reaction was stirred for 1 h and bromine (0.6 mL, 11.77 mmol) was added over 5 minutes. The reaction was stirred at this temperature for 1 h and very slowly quenched by slow addition to 50% aqueous sodium hydroxide (100 mL) with ice cooling (CAUTION,). Further aqueous sodium hydroxide was added to adjust pH to basic. The resulting mixture was extracted with diethyl ether (3×) and the organic phase dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated. Chromatography (silica gel, gradient elution, 0-50%, EtOAc in petrol 40-60), to give the title compound (1.30 g), MS: [M+H]+=241.
