Methanesulfonyl chloride (570 μL, 7.35 mmol) was added to a solution of (2R,5R)-4-benzyl-5-hydroxymethyl-2-methyl-piperazine-1-carboxylic acid tert-butyl ester (1.9 g, 6.12 mmol) containing TEA (2.6 mL, 18.4 mmol) in DCM (30 mL) at 0° C. The solution was stirred at room temperature for 18 h. The reaction was partitioned between aqueous NH4Cl and DCM. The organic phase was collected, dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated in vacuo. Chromatography (30% EtOAc in petrol) gave the title compound (1.6 g) as a white solid. MS: [M+H]+=339.
