[(tert-Butoxy)carbonyl]amino (2S)-2-{[(tert-butoxy)carbonyl](methyl)amino}-3-methylbutanoate is prepared from (25)-2-{[(tert-butoxy)carbonyl](methyl)amino}-3-methylbutanoate and N-tert-butoxycarbonyl hydroxylamine according to Scheme 6. The compound exists as rotomers and is reported as such. (1.18 g, 42%), 1H NMR (500 MHz, CHLOROFORM-d) δ ppm 7.50-8.11 (1H, m), 4.02-4.94 (1H, m), 3.49-3.50 (3H, m), 2.07-2.41 (1H, m), 1.37-1.55 (18H, m), 0.83-1.17 (6H, m).
