To a solution of methyl 2-formyl-6-methoxybenzoate (1.6 g, 8.24 mmol) in acetic anhydride (10 mL) was added 2-benzamidoacetic acid (1.77 g, 9.88 mmol) and NaOAc (810 mg, 9.88 mmol). The mixture was heated at 100° C. in a microwave reactor. The reactant mixture was partitioned between EtOAc (30 mL) and H2O (50 mL). The organic layer was washed with saturated aqueous Na2CO3 (5×30 mL), dried over Na2SO4, and concentrated to give the title compound (7 g). ESI-MS m/z [M+H]+ 338.1.
