A solution of 4 N-(1-(1-(tert-butyldimethylsilyloxy)-2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrrolo[1,2-a]indol-7-yl)butylidene)-1-(2,4-dimethoxyphenyl)methanamine (5.7 g, 11.2 mmol) and dimethyl 2-(methoxymethylene)malonate (2.55 g. 14.4 mmol) in Ph2O (10 mL) was heated at 220° C. for 30 min. The reaction mixture was then cooled to room temperature and loaded directly on silica gel eluting with hexanes/EtOAc (9:1) to afford the title compound as an orange foam (1.7 g, 25%).
