Mixture of 5-(2-hydroxyethyl)pyrimidine-2,4-diol (1.0 g, 6.4 mmole), 5 ml. of acetic anhydride, and ca. 30 ml. of dry pyridine was stirred for 1 hr. under anhydrous condition. The clear solution was treated with water and evaporated under vacuum to leave a white residue that was recrystallized from water to yield the monoacetate as white powder 2-(2,4-dihydroxypyrimidin-5-yl)ethyl acetate (0.95 g. 74%). LC-MS (m/z)=199 [M+H]+.
