Acetyl chloride (1.0 ml, 14.1 mmol) was added dropwise to a solution of [(2S,3S)-1-(4-acetyl-benzoyl)-2-methyl-4-oxo-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-benzo[b][1,4]diazepin-3-yl]-carbamic acid tert-butyl ester (0.45 g, 1.03 mmol) in methanol at 0° C. and the reaction was allowed to warm to ambient temperature and stir for 2 h. The reaction was concentrated in vacuo to give (3S,4S)-5-(4-acetyl-benzoyl)-3-amino-4-methyl-1,3,4,5-tetrahydro-benzo[b][1,4]diazepin-2-one hydrochloride which was used in the subsequent step without further purification (0.36 g, 100%).
