Into a 50-mL round-bottom flask, which was purged and maintained with an inert atmosphere of nitrogen, was placed a solution of methyl 3-acetyl-4-methylbenzoate (compound 27.1, 200 mg, 1.04 mmol) in chloroform (4 mL). Bromine (53 μL, 1.04 mmol) was added drop-wise and the solution was stirred for 2 h at room temperature, then concentrated under reduced pressure. Obtained 300 mg (crude) of the title compound as a brown solid.
