Into a 100-mL round-bottom flask, was placed a mixture of 2-(2-cyclopropyl-5-(methoxycarbonyl)-4-methylphenyl)-5-methyl-3H-imidazo[4,5-c]pyridin-5-ium iodide (compound 87.3, 300 mg, 0.67 mmol) and NaBH4 (1.42 g, 37.5 mmol) in methanol (30 mL). The resulting mixture was stirred for 4 h at room temperature, then concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was diluted with EtOAc (120 mL) and the mixture was washed with brine (2×40 mL), dried (Na2SO4), filtered, and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography with EtOAc/MeOH (20/1) as the eluent to yield 170 mg (78%) the title compound as a light yellow oil.
