Into a 100-mL round-bottom flask, was placed a solution of methyl 5-(2-acetyl-4-methyl-1H-imidazol-5-yl)-2,4-dimethylbenzoate (compound 198.2, 300 mg, 1.10 mmol) in methanol (30 mL). This was followed by the addition of NaBH4 (84 mg, 2.22 mmol) in portions at 0° C. The resulting solution was stirred for 1 h at room temperature, then carefully quenched with 1 mL of aqueous hydrogen chloride (2 M). The resulting mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure. This resulted in 330 mg (crude) of the title compound as a white solid.
