Procedure
Into a 250-mL three neck round-bottom flask, which was purged and maintained with an inert atmosphere of nitrogen, were placed a solution of 3-(4-methyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)propanamide (compound 232.3, 2 g, 13.06 mmol) in toluene (100 mL) and P2O5 (2 g, 14.08 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred for 12 h at 120° C., then quenched with 100 mL of water. The aqueous phase was extracted with 2×200 mL of ethyl acetate and the combined organic layers were washed with 2×100 mL of sodium carbonate (sat.), dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure. This resulted in 1 g (57%) of 3-(4-methyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)propanenitrile as light yellow oil
