Procedure
Into a 50-mL round-bottom flask, was placed a solution of methyl 5-(4-formyl-2-methyl-1H-imidazol-5-yl)-2,4-dimethylbenzoate (compound 236.2, 400 mg, 1.47 mmol) in methanol (20 mL). This was followed by the addition of NaBH4 (100 mg, 2.64 mmol) in several batches at 0° C. The reaction mixture was stirred for 1 h at room temperature, then was used for next step directly.
