Reaction Steps
39.6 g (200 mmol) 4-(2-hydroxyethylamino)-2-nitrophenol is added to a mixture of 150 ml water and 15 ml 1,2-dimethoxyethane. 33.9 g (220 mmol) diethyl sulfate is added dropwise at an internal temperature of 60° C. so that the pH of the solution is maintained between 6 and 8 by simultaneous dropwise addition of 10% sodium hydroxide (ca. 62 ml). After complete reaction, the solution is filtered through a pleated filter and cooled with stirring to 5° C. The product is allowed to crystallize.
