A solution of 28.5 g (0.05 mol) of bis(p-tert-butoxyphenyl)(p-methylphenyl)sulfonium trifluoromethanesulfonate and 1.5 g (0.01 mol) of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid in 400 g of methanol was heated at 60° to 70° C. for 6.5 hours with stirring. The reaction mixture was evaporated in vacuo. The residual oil was washed two times with 200 g of diethyl ether. The amount of this crude product was 22 g (96% yield). Without further purification, the crude product was used in subsequent reaction.
