Procedure
To a solution of 2-butyl-1-hydroxy-4-(trifluoromethyl)-1H-imidazole-5-carboxylic acid, ethyl ester (506 mg, 3.14 mmol) dissolved in a mixture of 5 mL of methanol and 10 mL of diethyl ether was added ethereal diazomethane until disappearance of starting acid was indicated by TLC. Anhydrous magnesium sulfate was then added and the solution filtered and concentrated in vacuo. Flash chromatography on 10 g of Merck silica gel eluted with 2:1, CHCl3 :hexanes, followed by 10:1, CHCl3 :Et2O afforded the title D compound (540 mg).
