Reaction Steps
To a solution of 0.062 g (0.19 mmol) of the product of Step A in 1.5 mL of anhydrous DMF was added 8.4 mg of a 60% oil dispersion of sodium hydride and the reaction mixture was stirred under a nitrogen atmosphere. After the reaction mixture had stirred 30 minutes at room temperature, hydrogen evolution had ceased, and a solution of 0.048 g of methyl 2-bromophenylacetate in 0.5 mL of dry DMF was added via syringe. The reaction mixture was stirred an additional 1.5 hours and then partitioned between ethyl acetate and water. The organic layer was separated, washed with brine, dried (MgSO4), filtered, evaporated and then chromatographed on a silica gel flash chromatography column eluted with 50% ethyl acetate-hexane. The purified fractions were combined, evaporated and dried in vacuo to afford 59 mg (66%) of the title compound as a viscous oil.
