Procedure

2.00 Grams of 6-methoxycarbonyl-5-[2-(4-trifluoromethylphenylthio)ethyl]cyclohexane-1,3-dione was dissolved in 30 ml of water, and 1.6 g of sodium carbonate was added to the resulting solution which was then heated under reflux for 5 hours. After thoroughly cooling the reaction solution, the reaction solution was extracted with ether to remove impurities, and the aqueous layer was acidified with hydrochloric acid and extracted with ethyl acetate to separate the desired product. The ethyl acetate layer was dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and after removing ethyl acetate, the resulting crystals were washed with hexane to obtain 1.5 g of 5-[2-(4-trifluoromethylphenylthio)ethyl]cyclohexane-1,3-dione.
