Procedure
A solution of 4.05 gm (0.03 mole) of 4-propionylpyridine, 3.12 gm (0.03 mole) of ethyl carbazate and 100 ml of absolute ethanol is refluxed 6 hr. The hot solution is filtered. The filtrate is diluted with water to the cloud point. The mixture is cooled at room temperature and then chilled in the refrigerator to give crystals which are collected, washed with Skellysolve B and dried to yield 3.25 gm (49%) of the title compound having a melting point of 147.1° C.
