2-oxo-2-((10S,13S,16R,17S)-10,13,16,17-tetramethyl-3-oxo-2,3,6,7,8,10,12,13,14,15,16,17-dodecahydro-1H-cyclopenta[a]phenanthren-17-yl)ethyl acetate (144 g) is stirred in 1500 ml methanol and treated with sodium methoxide (25%, 5 ml) for 30 minutes. The mixture is partitioned between methylene chloride and sodium bicarbonate. The organic phase is separated and washed with sodium bicarbonate, dried over sodium sulfate, and concentrated to give the title compound.
