To a solution of tert-butyl 3-(3-acetyl-5-chloro-2-methoxy-6-methylphenyl)azetidine-1-carboxylate (1.3 g, 3.7 mmol) in methanol (20 mL) stirring at 0° C. was added sodium tetrahydroborate (0.167 g, 4.41 mmol). The mixture was stirred at 0˜5° C. for 1 hour. The reaction was quenched with water and extracted with EtOAc (3×). The combined extracts were dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated to give 1.3 g (100%) of the desired product. LCMS calculated for C18H26ClNO4Na (M+Na)+: m/z=378.2; Found: 378.1. 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3): δ 7.37 (s, 1H), 5.10 (q, 1H), 4.30 (m, 2H), 4.14 (m, 3H), 3.63 (s, 3H), 2.25 (s, 3H), 1.48 (d, 3H), 1.44 (s, 9H) ppm.
