Procedure

1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-6,7-dimethoxy-1,1,4,4-tetramethylnaphthalene (Example 1, 0.7 g, 2.82 mmol) was dissolved in anhydrous CH2Cl2. At −78° C., BBr3 (2.96 mL, 2.96 mmol, 1.0M in CH2Cl2) was slowly added. The reaction mixture was allowed to warm up to room temperature and stir for 30 minutes before being quenched with ice water. The layers were separated, and the aqueous layer extracted three times with CH2Cl2. The combined organic layers were washed with brine, dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated in vacuo to provide the title compound. 1H NMR (CDCl3): 1.22 (s, 12H), 1.64 (s, 4H), 4.98 (s, 2H, —OH), 6.78 (s, 2H). This compound was used in the next step without further purification.
