To the solution of 4-(ethoxycarbonyl)-3,5-dimethyl-1-(1-phenylethyl)pyridin-1-ium bromide (3.91 mmol) was added portionwise the mixture of potassium ferricyanide (2.57 g, 7.81 mmol) and sodium hydroxide (0.94 g, 23.44 mmol) in H2O (5 ml) for 2 h at room temperature. The solution was concentrated under vacuum, diluted with water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layers were combined, dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated to give a residue. The residue was used to the next step without further purification.
