Reaction Steps

To a solution of 5-formyl-1-naphtoic acid tert-butyl ester (Example 9.3) (1.5 g) in ethanol (7.6 ml) was added aqueous hydroxylamine (50% w/v) (0.48 ml) and the reaction mixture was stirred at ambient temperature for 16 hours. The reaction mixture was concentrated and the residue was purified by column chromatography on silica gel (eluent: cyclohexane/ethyl acetate) to give 5-(hydroxyimino-methyl)-1-naphtoic acid tert-butyl ester (1.4 g). 1H-NMR (CDCl3, 400 MHz): 8.90 (d, 1H), 8.81 (s, 1H), 8.62 (d, 1H), 8.10 (d, 1H), 7.80 (d, 1H), 7.50-7.65 (m, 2H), 1.70 (s, 9H).
