6.00 g (14.562 mmol) of the compound from Example 23A were dissolved in 70 ml of ethanol, and 2.740 g (14.562 mmol) of dimethyl 2,2-dimethyl-3-oxobutanedioate (described in J. Am. Chem. Soc. 124(14), 3680-3691; 2002) were added. The mixture was heated at reflux overnight. After cooling, the solid was filtered off with suction and washed with a little ethanol, and the filtrate was concentrated and dried under high vacuum.
