To a solution of trans-1-benzyl-4-(4-methoxyphenyl)piperidin-3-ol (9 g, 30 mmol) in methanol (150 mL) was added 10% Pd/C (4.8 g) and the reaction was stirred overnight under a hydrogen atmosphere. The catalyst was then removed by filtration through Celite and the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure to give (+/−) trans-4-(4-methoxyphenyl)-piperidin-3-ol (5.1 g, 24.6 mmol, 81% yield). 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ ppm 7.10-7.15 (m, 2H) 6.80-6.86 (m, 2H) 4.30 (d, J=5.27 Hz, 1H) 3.37-3.43 (m, 1H) 3.04 (dd, J=11.58, 4.36 Hz, 1H) 2.86 (d, J=12.17 Hz, 1H) 2.43 (td, J=12.09, 2.67 Hz, 1H) 2.22-2.35 (m, 2H) 1.57-1.63 (m, 1H) 1.43-1.54 (m, 1H).
