Procedure
To a solution of methyl trans-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)cyclopentanecarboxylate (Step B) 60 mg, 0.256 mmol) in MeOH (2 ml), under nitrogen at RT, was added silver sulfate (80 mg, 0.256 mmol) followed by iodine (65.0 mg, 0.256 mmol). The resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 hour, then, filtered solids washing with MeOH and concentrated filtrate. The residue was purified by flash column chromatography on silica gel, eluting with EtOAc in hexanes to afford the titled compound. 1H NMR (500 MHz, CDCl3): δ 7.63 (d, J=2.2 Hz, 1H); 7.15 (dd, J=8.4, 2.2 Hz, 1H); 6.75 (d, J=8.4 Hz, 1H); 3.85 (s, 3H); 3.70 (s, 3H); 3.12 (m, 1H); 3.00 (m, 1H); 2.33 (ddd, J=13.2, 8.0, 4.6 Hz, 1H); 2.17-2.10 (m, 2H); 1.94 (m, 1H); 1.83 (m, 1H); 1.61 (m, 1H).
