An 18-mL vial was charged with methyl 2-[4-[[2-(3-chlorophenyl)-6,7-dihydro-5H-cyclopenta[b]pyridin-4-yl]amino]phenyl]acetate (31 mg, 0.77 mmol, 1 eq.) and lithium hydroxide monohydrate (48 mg, 1.14 mmol, 1.48 eq.). To this was added THF (1 ml) and water (0.5 ml). The resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight. Then 2N HCl aq. (0.6 ml) was added. The volatile materials were removed under reduced pressure to give a residue, which was purified by chromatography on silica gel using 2˜5% of MeOH in dichloromethane as eluent to give 2-[4-[[2-(3-Chlorophenyl)-6,7-dihydro-5H-cyclopenta[b]pyridin-4-yl]amino]phenyl]acetic acid (26 mg, HCl salt, 81% yield). MW=378.85. 1H NMR (DMSO-D6, 360 MHz) δ 14.23 (brs, 1H), 12.39 (brs, 1H), 9.84 (brs, 1H), 7.91 (s, 1H), 7.70 (d, J=7.70 Hz, 1H), 7.63 (d, J=8.40, 1H), 7.57 (dd, J=7.70, 8.40 Hz, 1H), 7.36 (brs, 4H), 7.02 (s, 1H), 3.60 (s, 2H), 3.11 (t, J=7.90 Hz, 2H), 2.90 (t, J=7.40 Hz, 2H), 2.20 (m, 2H).
