Reaction Steps

A 250-mL round bottomed flask was charged with 2,4-dichloro-6-cyclopropylpyridine (1.08 g, 5.74 mmol), (3-chlorophenyl)boronic acid (0.99 g, 6.32 mmol), tetrakis(triphenylphosphine)palladium(0) (0.332 g, 0.28 mmol), and Cs2CO3 (5.61 g, 17.2 mmol). Toluene (40 ml), EtOH (10 ml) and water (20 ml) were added. The resulting mixture was stirred under Ar at 90° C. for 23 h. After cooling to room temperature, the reaction mixture was diluted with water (50 mL) and dichloromethane (50 mL). The mixture was filtered through celite washing solids with dichloromethane. The aqueous layer was separated and extracted with dichloromethane (2×50 mL). The combined organic extract was washed with saturated sodium chloride (25 mL) then dried over sodium sulfate, filtered, and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by chromatography on silica using hexane/dichloromethane (100:0 to 0:100) as eluent to afford the title compound (0.30 g, 20%) as a colorless oil. MW=264.15. 1H NMR (CDCl3, 500 MHz) δ 7.98-7.96 (m, 1H), 7.85-7.80 (m, 1H), 7.45 (d, J=1.5 Hz, 1H), 7.39-7.35 (m, 2H), 7.12 (d, J=1.5 Hz, 1H), 2.18-2.01 (m, 1H), 1.18-1.12 (m, 2H), 1.06-1.00 (m, 2H).
