Procedure
To a stirred solution of 2-(2,6-dimethylphenyl)-3H-benzoimidazole-5-carboxylic acid methyl ester (8.5 g) in MeOH (80 mL) was added 1N NaOH (80 mL) and the solution was heated at 100° C. for 18 h. The mixture was washed with Et2O and the aqueous layer was carefully acidified to pH=2-3 with 1N HCl and the resulting precipitate was filtered, washed with water and dried under reduced pressure to give 2-(2,6-dimethylphenyl)-3H-benzoimidazole-5-carboxylic acid as a red solid; MS (ESI)m/z 267 (M+H).
