To a solution of 3-(4-formyl-3,5-dimethylphenyl)-acrylic acid methyl ester (900 mg, 4.1 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (20 mL) was added 10% Pd/C (90 mg) and the mixture was hydrogenated at one atm overnight. The catalyst was filtered through Celite and was washed with CH2Cl2. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure and the residue was purified by flash chromatography using heptane/EtOAc (5:1) to give 3-(4-formyl-3,5-dimethylphenyl)-propionic acid methyl ester as a light yellow oil.
