To a 250 mL round bottomed flask charged with (1-benzenesulfonyl-5-fluoro-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridin-2-yl)-(4-methylsulfanyl-phenyl)-methanol (2.1 g, 4.9 mmol) in dichloromethane (200 mL) was added Dess-Martin periodinane (2.5 g, 5.9 mmol) at 25° C. The reaction mixture was stirred at 25° C. for 1 h and then quenched with a saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution (60 mL). The mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate (250 mL), washed with a saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution (3×50 mL), brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated in vacuo. Purification by flash silica gel chromatography (silica gel from QingDao, 200-300 mesh, glass column from Shanghai SD company, 20% ethyl acetate/hexanes) afforded (1-benzenesulfonyl-5-fluoro-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridin-2-yl)-(4-methylsulfanyl-phenyl)-methanone (1.9 g, 90%) as a light yellow oil: LC/MS m/e calcd for C21H15FN2O3S2 [M+H]+ 427.49, observed 426.7.
