A mixture of 4-[2-cyclopentyl-1-(5-methyl-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridin-2-yl)-vinyl]-2-fluoro-benzoic acid methyl ester (0.8 g, 2.1 mmol) and 10% palladium on activated carbon (600 mg) in methanol (100 mL) was heated at 50° C. under hydrogen (50 psi) for 5 h. After cooling to room temperature, the catalyst was removed by filtration and washed with ethyl acetate. The filtrate was concentrated in vacuo to give 4-[2-cyclopentyl-1-(5-methyl-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridin-2-yl)-ethyl]-2-fluoro-benzoic acid methyl ester as a white solid (129 mg, 16%): LC/MS m/e calcd for C23H25FN2O2 [M+H]+ 381.47, observed 381.0.
