A 2.0 mol/L sodium hydroxide aqueous solution (0.10 L) was added to a THF (0.25 L)-methanol (0.25 L) solution of ethyl 4-{[4-(dimethoxymethyl)phenyl]ethynyl}benzoate (21 g) as obtained in Example 10-(2), and the mixture was stirred for 3 hours at room temperature. The solvent was distilled off, and then water and acetic acid were added to the residue to adjust it to pH 4. The precipitate was filtered off and dried. Hexane/ethyl acetate (3:1 (v/v)) was added, and the mixture was stirred for a while. The precipitate was filtered off and dried to obtain 4-{[4-(dimethoxymethyl)phenyl]ethynyl}benzoic acid (white solid) (15 g, 75%).
