A solution of 1-bromopropan-2-one (7.8 mL, 102 mmol) in DCM (15 mL) was added dropwise to a solution of (S)-2-aminopropan-1-ol (18.2 g, 0.243 mol) and anhydrous DCM (150 mL) at 0° C. The reaction stirred at 0° C. for 2 h. Water (150 mL) was added, and the organic phase was separated. The aqueous was extracted with DCM (3×40 mL), and the combined organic layers were washed with brine (50 mL), dried over Na2SO4, filtered, and concentrated to give the crude product 19.5 g, which was used directly in the following step. LCMS: 132 (M+H)+.
