A solution of 2,6-dichloro-α-(ethoxymethylene)-5-fluoro-β-oxo-3-pyridinepropanoic acid ethyl ester (1.00 g; prepared according to EP 132845) was treated with ethanolamine (0.18 mL). After a few minutes, the reaction mixture became sticky and was diluted with Hept/ether (1:1; 10 mL). After further stirring at rt for 1.5 h, the solvents were evaporated under reduced pressure and the crude yellow oil was directly used in the next step.
