1.5 ml (14.27 mmol) of 2-fluorobenzaldehyde and 1.66 g (5.18 mmol) of 3-methyl-1H-pyrazol-5-amine are added respectively to a solution of 2.5 g (14.27 mmol) of 3-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3-oxopropanenitrile in 60 ml of acetonitrile. The reaction mixture is carried at reflux for 16 hours. The solution is allowed to return to room temperature and then the solid is filtered and rinsed several times with acetonitrile to yield 4.5 g (87%) of 4-(2-fluorophenyl)-6-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3-methyl-4,7-dihydro-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridine-5-carbonitrile in the form of a white solid.
