Procedure

A mixture of 2.54 g of methyl (R)-1-(3-amino-4-chlorobenzenesulfonyl)pyrrolidine-2-carboxylate and 5.68 g of 3,4-dimethoxycyclobut-3-ene-1,2-dione in 50 ml of methanol was heated at 60° C. overnight. The solvent was evaporated off and the residue was chromatographed on silica gel eluted with heptane/ethyl acetate (4:1, 2:1, and pure ethyl acetate). 0.92 g of methyl (R)-1-[3-(2-methoxy-3,4-dioxocyclobut-1-enylamino)benzenesulfonyl]pyrrolidine-2-carboxylate was obtained. Yield=23%.
