Procedure
To the ketone 50 (58.0 g, 0.145 mol) in methyl alcohol (1 L) was added by portion NaBH4 (5.5 g, 0.145 mol) at 0° C. The solution was stirred for 20 min then quenched with saturated aqueous NH4Cl solution (500 mL); and methanol was evaporated. The residue was diluted with ethyl acetate (1 L) and washed with brine, dried over magnesium sulfate and rotary evaporated to give 55.6 g (95%) of crude product 51.
