To a solution of cis-9-octadecenoic acid succinimide (18.3 g, 48.2 mmol) in 50 ml of acetonitrile is added 1-amino-2,3-propanediol (4.4 g, 48.2 mmol) in 50 ml of H2O. After stirring for 12 hours at room temperature the acetonitrile is distilled off and the residue is extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined organic phases are extracted with saturated NaCl solution. The organic phase is dried with MgSO4, filtrated and concentrated. The residue is crystallized from isohexane. Yield: 87% of a colorless powder.
