1-Acetyl-3-(2-acetoxyethyl)-4,6-dimethylindoline (2.0 g) was dissolved in a mixture of CHCl3/MeOH=1/1 (25 ml), and a solution of NaOH (1.5 g) in water (5 ml) was added, which was followed by stirring at room temperature for 1 hr. The solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure. CHCl3 (100 ml) was added, and the mixture was washed with water and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. CHCl3 was evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (eluent: CHCl3/MeOH=50/1−10/1) to give 1.2 g of 1-acetyl-3-(2-hydroxyethyl)-4,6-dimethylindoline.
