Reaction Steps
A mixture of 22.74 g of the product of Step D of Example 3, 49.4 ml of hydrazine monohydrate, 96 ml of diethylene glycol and 38.4 ml of 38% caustic potassium hydroxide was stirred for 30 minutes at 140° C. and after the mixture was heated to 210° C., the water and hydrazine hydrate were distilled off. Stirring was continued for one hour at 210° C. and the mixture was allowed to return to ambient temperature and poured into 300 ml of a saturated aqueous soluton of sodium chloride. Extraction took place with ethyl acetate and the extracts were evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure. The residue was chromatographed on silica (eluant: methylene chloride) to obtain 20.55 g of the desired product melting at 139° C. which was used as is for the following step.
