Procedure
A mixture of 2-(p-methoxybenzoyl)-3-methyl-5-allyloxybenzofuran (1 gm, 3.10 mmole) in ortho dichlorobenzene (5 mL) was refluxed under nitrogen for a period of 5 hours. On cooling, the product crystallized. It was diluted with hexane, filtered, washed with hexane, and air-dried to yield 870 mg (87%) of 2-(p-methoxybenzoyl)-3-methyl-4-allyl- 5-hydroxy-benzofuran, mp. 155°-158° C.
