Procedure
113.5 ml of a 2N sodium hydroxide solution were added to a solution of 22.1 g of the ketovalylleucine methyl ester obtained in Example 10 in 200 ml of methanol, and the mixture was stirred for 1 hour. The methanol solvent was subsequently removed under reduced pressure, and the resulting aqueous solution was buffered with saturated ammonium chloride solution. After the mixture had been adjusted to pH 2 with 6N hydrochloric acid, it was extracted with dichloromethane. The collected organic phases were dried over sodium sulfate, and after filtration, the solvent was removed under reduced pressure. 15.0 g of the title compound were obtained in the form of an oil. The compound proved to have properties identical to those of the product obtained in Example 8.
