3-butyryl-4-(2-methylphenylamino)-6-benzoyloxymethylquinoline (3.0 g, 6.8 mol) was dissolved in methanol (50 ml) and 2 M sodium hydroxide solution (50 ml) was added. The mixture was heated under reflux for 45 minutes until a clear solution was obtained. The mixture was partitioned between chloroform and water, the aqueous layer re-extracted with chloroform and the combined organic solutions washed with brine, dried filtered and evaporated. Crystallization from ether afforded 3-butyryl-4-(2-methylphenylamino)-6-hydroxymethylquinoline; (1.9 g, 83%), m.p. 139° C.-41° C.
